Rain Part 1
Rain
Chapter 7
A steady rain pounded down from the dark sky. The small group of men travelling along the narrow path looked thoroughly soaked. They had one small dimly lit lantern to light the way. It only made the thick woods look more dark and menacing. Although the trees arced over the path they provided no shelter from the down pour. Leaving the men look somewhat drowned.
The man in the lead stopped and held up his hand. “Well, we’re getting close to the home of the Herb witch. I think it’s time you earned that fee that my uncle paid you.” He was probably the shortest man in the group and he turned to the man right behind him who might’ve been the tallest man in the group. “So Ransom find us away in and remember we don’t want her to know were coming.”
The taller man, Ransom, moved to the front of the group. He was noticeably better dressed than the others. His cloak appeared to be made of a thick wool that had water beading on it instead of soaking through it. Unlike the other men he wasn’t wearing rough leathers but was dressed in light well-made clothing such as a wealthy merchant might choose.
He removed a pair of glasses from a case. Aside from their lenses they look like fairly basic glasses. Their lenses were formed from what looked like two chunks of coal that were cut like gemstones. He donned them and appeared to be looking ahead.
“Well if I understand correctly, Refuge, I’m to get you in without being detected. It appears we can’t go this way.” He looked to the right and then to the left and continued hesitantly “at present I don’t see a way in.” Removing the glasses, he squinted ahead through the rain. “Standing stones. I see, well I suggest we head that way and watch for a wide gap, I’ll see if there is a hole in any wide gaps we find.” He pointed to the left.
One of the three men in the back muttered “I think this is a bad idea” and then he spoke a little louder “why that way?”
“The foliage doesn’t look as thick” Ransom replied “we might not get as soaked.”
Refuge, the small man, turned and started into the woods “this way boys. Ransom you’d better find a way for us to get in there.” The men headed into the woods travelling parallel to the standing stones that lined the Herb witch’s property.
Greetings. I just thought this week I’d wish everybody out there a Merry Christmas. I’m sure that will probably offend some people, although it shouldn’t. I find the most offensive holiday greetings to be seasons greetings, or happy holidays. With other greetings people are trying to share a bit of their joy of their holiday, or they took the time to get to know you and are encouraging you to have a good holiday. What I wish somebody a Merry Christmas I’m not forcing them to be a Christian, I’m simply sharing the joy of my holiday with them. That shouldn’t offend anyone.
